IPO – Should You Jump In or Hold Back?
IPO – Should You Jump In or Hold Back?
Let me share a little narrative with you…
A couple of weeks ago, a good friend of mine, John, called me up with excitement buzzing in his voice. “Hey, Ritika, there’s this company going public, and I think it’s going to be huge! It’s their IPO tomorrow – should I invest?”
I paused for a moment, reflecting on my own experience with IPOs.
So what exactly is an IPO?
Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) are an exhilarating milestone for any company. That’s when a private company first offers its shares to the public thus opening doors for investors like us. However, there is this hitch – while growth prospects may exist, risks are frequently disregarded. An IPO is as good as a company’s first appearance on the stock market. This enables investors to buy shares in a business that was privately owned before. The hope? As the company grows, so does the value of your investment.
However, here’s where it gets tricky.
Is this worth it to invest?
Some considerations below:
Unpredictability – IPOs are notorious for their unpredictability as their share prices can depend on any one single day amidst them or even fall like no tomorrow. Consider this as being the initial stages of the most thrilling rollercoaster ride ever.
Buzz vs reality- A company generates so much noise in the marketplace and many investors buy into that; caution should be taken because a good market campaign doesn't always mean an indication of a good long-term business model.
Risky- IPOs are high-risk, high-reward. If you’re looking for stability, they may not be for you.
So, should you invest?
John eventually went ahead and was happy that he did because, within a short time, the stock appreciated in value. However, there were other classes of IPOs where outcomes were quite contrary. What’s most important here? Do your homework! Investigate about the firm, its business structure and judge your chances against risks involved with purchasing shares in this organization
The Bottom Line
For me, I chose to stay on the sidelines. However, if you have a high-risk appetite, IPOs might be a worthy addition to your portfolio—just ensure you’ve done your research.
